The Best Medicine

Things around here have been pretty crazy lately. Lots of great, totally amazing things have been happening but we're at a big transition point in our lives and it's stressing me out. My sinuses have been attacking me from the inside out for weeks and my teeth hurt. I'm worried about things. Not in any kind of serious way, just in the regular day-to-day way.

The thing is, this used to be my every day. I used to get depressed a lot and the best thing that happened to me was when Star Trek reruns started up on Spike TV at 2pm, every weekday afternoon. I remember, one time about eight years ago, lying on the couch in my dad's house with an ice pack on an abscessed tooth, with tears streaming down my face, thinking, "At least I can watch some Star Trek."

Now, even though my situation isn't anywhere close to this dire, I'm firing up my Netflix today and thinking to myself, "At least I can watch some Star Trek." And really, that's why I'm doing all of this. Not because I'm chronically depressed (I'm not) or a constant allergy sufferer (I am), but because no matter what's going on, sometimes you just need something familiar and comfortable to make you feel better.

Star Trek is that thing for me and I think it's important to acknowledge that. I think it's important that we acknowledge all the little things that help us all get through our regular, every day stress.  It's easy to forget that seemingly trivial things, like a TV show, can really be that important. I'm just glad I didn't forget that today.

  2. I can totally relate. And, am currently watching ST VOY right now. Every night for me. Sometimes during the day. It's therapy for me, as well. My happy place :) Nice post.

  3. Hello.

I've just come to the end of Enterprise. (watching, "These Are the Voyages" this evening.)

This is a lovely post. Nicely written.

My name is John. (Toronto, Canada here.) 'Looking forward to reading more about your "year-long voyage".

    1. Welcome! I'm so glad you joined us! At this point, I'm honestly terrified of the point that I come to the end of Enterprise. Just thinking about the last episode of Star Trek makes me so sad. But, the nice thing is, you can always re-watch them.

    2. And re-watch them I do. :)

I was terrified for completely different reasons (for the watching of the last episode of Enterprise) primarily because I knew how bad "These Are the Voyages" was for me in previous viewings (this was my 3rd time seeing it) and there was just a sense of foreboding. (I always felt it was a disrespectful send-off to the show, even though the sentiment had good intentions.)

BUT... I actually found myself enjoying it this time around, which I attribute to having read the Enterprise novels (published since the end of the show) that respectfully addressed the very things I had issues with in the finale.

Further-enjoyable, was the Okuda Text Commentary of the episode (upon another viewing) which revealed beautiful/sentimental behind the scenes details about the show and it's significance as the final hour of Star Trek on television... and the cast, crew and NASA astronaut cameos... (I was previously unaware of) and I actually found myself THOROUGHLY enjoying it for what it was: a "farewell" and a seed for more Trek to grow from.

I watched the entire four seasons over the course of a few months. I'm very curious to see how you fit 28 seasons into your life in a year. :)
